Guarnaschelli is the child of editors of cookbooks Maria Guarnaschelli and John Guarnaschelli. She graduated in 1991 from Barnard College with an art history degree. One year she was paid a minimum pay at an American Place in 1991. Guarnaschelli began her culinary career by watching her mother cook and editing recipes. Guarnaschelli's first job was with Larry Forgione. Her son Marc Forgione was the Iron Chef. Guarnaschelli later went on to be employed at several restaurants throughout France as well as Los Angeles. Guy Savoy is the owner of La Butte Chaillot. Before becoming part of Butter as its executive chef, Guarnaschelli worked at the restaurant of Daniel Boulud at his eponymous restaurant. The restaurant was closed in the summer of 2005. she was executive chef of The Darby. She was chairperson of the museum of Food and Drink's Culinary Council. Guarnaschelli published her first cookbook in 2013. "Old-School Comfort Food: The Way I Learned to cook" incorporates autobiographical elements with some of her favorite dishes of her professional career that she later adapted to her kitchen at home.
